Our approach
At nbn, we champion a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), fuelling innovation and empowering our teams to achieve brilliant outcomes for our customers, partners and communities.
We are a welcoming workplace where everyone can express their true selves in a vibrant environment that celebrates our diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

Our commitment to inclusion
We are proud to be a member of organisations including the Diversity Council of Australia, the Australian Disability Network, and Pride in Diversity. We continuously strive to improve by benchmarking ourselves against industry standards and have received Gold Employer status in the 2021 to 2024 Australian Workplace Equality Index.
To ensure nbn is a great place to work, we listen and seek feedback from our people through employee reference groups, and DEI networks to make sure our policies, practices and culture enable everyone to thrive professionally.
Our DEI pillars
Led by our employee networks – First Nations, Gender Equity, Cultural Diversity, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Accessibility – we create an inclusive environment where all our people feel empowered, safe and respected, have a sense of belonging, and can thrive and succeed.
The Liakukana Network
Our internal Liakukana ("lee-ah-koo-kaa-na") employee network brings together First Nations employees with diverse members who contribute to our fifth (Innovate) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
Our current RAP focuses on enhancing community engagement and providing innovative solutions for delivering the nbn® network to First Nations communities.

The name 'Liakukana' comes from significant people in Tasmania's Aboriginal history, and from being the first state or territory to have the nbn network rollout completed - the first drop in creating a nationwide ripple effect.
We believe nothing connects people like the stories we share. By providing platforms for First Nations stories to live and breathe, we are creating a ripple effect, expanding influence and inspiring new audiences.

We believe in equal and equitable opportunities for all of our people, regardless of gender. We promote a culture of inclusion to support everyone's success.
We're striving for a more gender-balanced team and are committed to lifting the representation of women across nbn, particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) roles, and management.

To deliver on our commitment, we have established organisation-wide targets and initiatives including:
- 40 per cent female representation in senior management positions, with ongoing performance published in our Annual and Half Year Reports
- Dedicated career development and mentoring programs to support emerging female leaders
- Opportunities for our people to get involved, learn and discuss via nbn Equals, our employee-led gender equity network
- Strong focus on achieving and maintaining Gender Pay Equity
- Providing flexible working options for all employees
- Gender-balanced recruitment shortlists and interview panels when hiring new employees
- 18 weeks of paid parental leave for new parents, and generous support for returning parents with the option to work four days a week (while receiving five days of pay)
- Certified Family Friendly workplace
At nbn, we celebrate the diverse cultures and identities of our people.
We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves and learning about each other's backgrounds.
Through our 'Culture at nbn' network, we encourage sharing stories to honour our rich, diverse heritage.

We also participate in the Dr John Yu Fellowship, which brings together those from business, government and not-for-profit organisations to become leaders in cultural diversity.
The first program of its kind in Australia, it addresses the gap in training for high-achieving multicultural leaders and organisations wanting to elevate their diversity and inclusion.
Our vision is that everyone feels safe, included and comfortable being their authentic selves at work.
At nbn, we listen to our LGBTQ+ team members for insights on improving and benchmarking ourselves against the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), earning consecutive Gold employer distinctions.

We make our vision our reality through:
- Inclusive policies and benefits that support the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families including inclusive parental leave, dedicated LGBTQ+ employee assistance and paid gender affirmation leave
- Training and education programs to promote LGBTQ+ awareness, inclusive language and leadership skills, and foster a more understanding workplace
- Celebrating important dates like Wear It Purple day, and Midsumma and Mardi Gras community events
- Expanding our Pride at nbn network to bring together the ally and rainbow communities in the workplace to build networking relationships, create a sense of belonging and have a lot of fun
