[Narrator]

0:04: Ever wondered why the Internet slows down when more devices are using it?

0:08: Here's how to make sense of your Internet connection and how to get more from it.

0:13: In 2015, the typical Australian home had two to three Internet connected devices.

0:19: Today, the average Australian household is estimated to have 25 connected devices at any one time.

0:26: That includes technology such as gaming consoles, smart TV's, security systems, smartphones and even smart speakers.

0:35: By 20-30, that number is predicted to reach 44 connected devices per household.

0:41: And with Australians continuing to adopt new technology into their everyday life, the demand for data will only continue to grow and grow.

0:49: So how does Internet speed come into the picture?

0:52: Think of your Internet like a busy highway, and think of the cars on the highway representing your Internet data.

0:58: Things like information, videos and content all travelling roughly at the same speed.

1:04: The speed you have available determines your bandwidth, and that's the number of lanes on the highway.

1:09: The more lanes, the more cars can flow at the same time without experiencing congestion.

1:14: So when you choose a higher speed plan, you're adding more lanes to your highway or your bandwidth.

1:20: This means more data can move at the same time, so multiple devices and users can enjoy a smooth experience even during peak usage.

1:28: Here is an example of a wholesale speed tier available on full Fibre and HFC technologies.

1:34: The first number is your download speed.

1:36: That is how quickly you can retrieve information from the Internet, for example, when you're streaming your favorite show online.

1:43: The second number is your upload speed, that is how quickly you can send something via the Internet, for example, uploading a video to your social media account.

1:52: So a higher speed plan means more bandwidth or more lanes so that you can stream, work and game online all at the same time across multiple devices with minimal congestion.

2:04: If you're unsure whether your current Internet plan is suited to your current household Internet needs, we recommend speaking with your Internet provider.

2:11: Additionally, you can check your address on the nbn website to see what connection type and maximum wholesale speed plan is available to you.

2:20: But remember, a high speed plan is only one part of a great connection.

2:24: How your in home Internet equipment is set up can also make a big difference to your online experience.

2:30: Great Internet starts with a great set up.

2:33: The way your Internet equipment is set up in your home can influence your experience online.

2:38: Here are three quick tips on how to best set up your Internet equipment.

2:42: Firstly, if your Wi-Fi router is more than five years old, you may want to consider whether it's still suitable for your needs.

2:49: Secondly, ensure your Wi-Fi router is placed in an elevated, uncluttered location, ideally with a clear line of sight to where you use the Internet most.

2:58: Thirdly, if your home is larger or multi Storey, consider adding a mesh network to help spread the Wi-Fi signal evenly throughout your home.

^Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy periods, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality and set-up, chosen broadband plan, age of device(s) and/or how your provider designs its network). The activities supported by each nbn speed tier may also be impacted by a number of factors (and could be degraded depending on the number of people online at the same time, and your nbn access technology). Activities and timeframes described are based on testing conducted in nbn product labs of nbn wholesale HFC and FTTP products, at the retail level based on the peak achievable speed of that speed tier.

#Not all providers offer plans based on the full range of wholesale speed tiers. Talk to your preferred provider for more information about availability and the right retail solution for your needs.
