In this blog, we’ll provide regular updates on the response to Tropical Cyclone Seroja in Western Australia and details of our support to local communities as it relates to the nbn™ network.

NBN Co is pleased to advise that all nbn services have now been restored following the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

Mains power outages persist in some areas of Western Australia, and nbn infrastructure in these areas continues to be supported by back-up generators as an interim measure until Western Power restores mains power across the region.

In total, NBN Co recovered and restored nbn services to more than 16,500 premises within five days of this extreme weather event.

This will be the final update for Tropical Cyclone Seroja. For any localised phone or internet service outages, please contact your Retail Service Provider in the first instance.

NBN Co has completed the deployment of a number of generators across the areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Seroja. These will remain in place until power is fully restored.

To date, NBN Co has recovered more than 16,000 services across Australia following the impact of the cyclone.

There are just over 100 services currently affected as a result of the cyclone. NBN Co will be on the ground again today alongside the community and local authorities as they begin to recover from the event.

NBN Co continues to deploy generators across the areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Seroja, while it repairs damaged network equipment.

Customers in the area are reminded that it’s important to contact your Retail Service Provider in the first instance to check on any other local outages that are unrelated to the impact on the nbn™ network.

To date, NBN Co has recovered more than 15,500 services across Australia following the impact of the cyclone.

There are just over 1000 services currently affected due to power outages or damage to the network. NBN Co will be on the ground again today to restore services as it is safe to do so.

NBN Co continues to deliver temporary network services with two nbn™ Road Muster Trucks and two nbn™ flyaway kits being deployed across the region to provide critical communications linkages for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and their operations, and assist the communities while network restoration continues.

nbn continues to respond to impacts on the network from Tropical Cyclone Seroja, which crossed the Western Australia coastline on Sunday evening.

nbn continues to deploy generators across the region to provide emergency power to affected sites. It’s important to contact your Retail Service Provider to check on any other local outages that are unrelated to the impact on the nbn™ network.

To date, nbn has recovered close to 14,000 services across Australia due to the impact of the cyclone.

Just under 2000 services are still currently affected due to power outages or damage to the network. Regions that may be affected by nbn outages include:

  • Moonyoonooka
  • Cape Burney
  • Glenfield
  • Dongara
  • Geraldton
  • Kalbarri
  • Northampton
  • Moresby Range

nbn continues to respond to impacts on the network from now Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

The all-clear has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) for the entire impacted region.

Overnight, nbn completed emergency repairs to nbn's Satellite Earth Station (SES) at Geraldton, which was affecting some nbn™ Sky Muster Satellite customers across Australia. In addition to this, nbn has moved all customers from this site to a redundancy site, further increasing the resilience in the network while the region is impacted.

2456 services are currently affected due to power outages or damage to the network. Areas which may be affected by nbn outages include:

  • Moonyoonooka
  • Cape Burney
  • Glenfield
  • Dongara
  • Geraldton
  • Kalbarri
  • Northampton
  • Moresby Range

nbn continues to respond to the impacts on the network from now Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

A RED ALERT (issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services) remains for Northhampton. Residents should stay in touch with the latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). The all-clear has been given for elsewhere.

There are currently 13,530 services impacted due to damage to the network and associated power loss.

nbn's Satellite Earth Station (SES) at Geraldton has suffered damage to its backup power supply. nbn currently has technicans onsite working to repair the damage and get the site operational ASAP.

The Geraldton SES services many nbn™ Sky Muster Satellite customers across Australia. As a result, some satellite customers across the country – not only in Western Australia – may currently be impacted.

1142 services are affected due to power outages or damage to the network. Areas which may be affected by nbn outages include:

  • Moonyoonooka
  • Cape Burney
  • Glenfield
  • Dongara
  • Geraldton
  • Kalbarri
  • Northampton

Once it is deemed safe for nbn staff to get into these areas, we will work as quickly as we can to reinstate the network.

An nbn™ Road Muster Truck is in Geraldton today providing critical communications linkages for DFES and their operations. nbn has dispatched a second nbn™ Road Muster Truck from Perth today to provide further assistance.

Tropical Cyclone Seroja crossed the Western Australia coast overnight, with damage sustained by several nbn sites.

A RED ALERT (issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services) remains for Kalbarri and Northhampton. Residents should stay in touch with the latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). The all-clear has been given for elsewhere.

There are currently 13,530 services impacted due to damage to the network and associated power loss. nbn's Satellite Earth Station (SES) at Geraldton has suffered damage to its backup power supply, which nbn is attempting to resolve today. The Geraldton SES services many nbn™ Sky Muster Satellite customers across Australia. As a result, some satellite customers across the country – not only in Western Australia – may currently be impacted.

1142 services are affected due to power outages or damage to the network. Areas such as Kalbarri and surrounds may take some time to restore, with access to the area impacted with power lines down and other associated damages.

An nbn™ Road Muster Truck is in Geraldton today supporting operations with the DFES.

Tropical Cyclone Seroja crossed the Western Australia coast overnight.

Residents in the warning areas of south of Carnarvon to Lancelin, including the Shires of Shark Bay, Northampton, Chapman Valley, Morawa, City of Greater Geraldton, Mingenew, Three Springs, Perenjori, Irwin, the townsites of Denham, Coorow, Carnamah, Moora, Paynes Find, Jurien Bay, Lancelin, Wongan Hills and Dalwallinu in the Midwest Gascoyne should stay in touch with the latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Your nbn service may become affected, especially where the cyclone damages critical power infrastructure. Prepare now by charging your mobile phones, charging banks etc.

nbn has activated an emergency management team to manage any impacts to the network. We are working closely with DFES. Yesterday, nbn moved a Road Muster Truck to Eneabba working alongside DFES and the State Emergency Service on emergency operations.

Starting this morning, nbn will assess the damage and impact on the network. nbn has temporary emergency equipment in the area and staff to begin surveying any damage to the network working towards a restoration plan. There are already reports of damage in the area and across roads, which may affect access into the area.

Tropical Cyclone Seroja is expected to impact the Western Australian Coast from this evening through to tomorrow morning.

Residents in the warning areas of Minilya Roadhouse to Lancelin along the coast, extending to inland areas including Mount Magnet, Dalwallinu and Paynes Find should prepare now for the cyclone to cross. nbn encourages all communities to stay in touch with the latest advice from the Bureau of Meterology and Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Your nbn service may become affected, especially where the cyclone damages critical power infrastructure. Prepare now by charging your mobile phones, charging banks etc.

nbn has activated an emergency management team to manage any impacts to the network. We are working closely with DFES.

Proactively, nbn is implementing a number of network redundancies to increase the resilience of the network. In addition to this, today nbn is planning to move one of our Road Muster Trucks from Perth to the Eneabba area to assist emergency operations in the event of network impacts throughout the area.



Tips to staying connected in an emergency


An emergency communications kit can help you to stay connected in a power outage, or if there is a disruption to services over the nbn™ network.

Staying mobile


Keep a charged mobile phone and portable mobile battery pack ready to use in a power outage, or if your connection to services over the nbn™ network is disrupted in an emergency event.

Tuning in to local info


With local radio being a great source of information during an emergency, include a battery powered radio in your emergency communications kit to tune in.

Backing up information


To make sure you can access important files and images from anywhere, consider creating a digital back up.



Preparation key to staying connected in an emergency


When it comes to staying safe – and connected – in the event of an emergency, it pays to be prepared.

The nbn™ network is robust, but it is important that residents are aware that services over the nbn™ network are likely to be affected by a large-scale event or power outages.

This is because equipment connected to services over the nbn™ network – both at the telephone exchange and within homes and businesses – will not work during a power outage.
