Aussies embrace tech to tone-up from their living room

Fitness expert Tim Robards is the new nbn™ Virtual Trainer.

Forget the gym, Aussies are embracing getting ‘net-fit’ and swapping personal trainers for tablets by working out in their living rooms aided by a growing wealth of online tools and how-to videos, according to new research from nbn.

With a world of fitness at their fingertips, more than half of Australians surveyed (53 per cent) would use the internet to help improve their training techniques and map their fitness progress.

And what better way to help get the nation clicking their way to a healthier lifestyle then with some homegrown inspiration?

To celebrate this rising trend, we teamed up with fitness expert, chiropractor and ex reality TV star, Tim Robards to create the nbn™ Virtual Trainer video series.

Over two workout sessions, viewers will get a taste of Tim’s fitness prowess coupled with some of the latest fitness trends ranging from animalistic moves, street workout drills to Bollywood dancing.

And the best thing? These 30-minute workout sessions have been designed to be streamed right from the comfort of your very own home, via a fast broadband connection.

“The nbn™ Virtual Trainer workouts I’ve created use some of the most interesting fitness trends available online at the moment and will get you growling, stretching and sweating all at the same time.

"Whether you’re stuck behind a desk all week long, an exercise novice or fitness junkie, there’s something for everyone to adapt for their own level.

"The most important thing is to keep challenging your body with new skills and routines, as well as keeping it fun and fresh, in ways that work for you,” says Robards.+

And if you weren’t already convinced, here are four more net-fit takeaways to help get you inspired:

  • Gym vs. living room: Almost two thirds of those surveyed (62 per cent) prefer to exercise in their living room than in the gym, with majority admitting they train at home because it’s free (95 per cent) and convenient (94 per cent).
  • Toning and strength top of the list: The top three fitness trends Aussies are turning to online are Yoga (28 per cent), weight training methods (25 per cent) and Pilates (23 per cent)
  • Motivated Millennials: Millennials are most inclined to turn to tech (84 per cent) to help them get the best results from their exercise. They are also the most likely to be intimidated working out in the gym (67 per cent) and are the most motivated by getting ‘beach-body ready’ for summer (63 per cent)
  • Game-on: Almost one in four Aussies are interested in trying out fitness-based video games online
