There’s more than meets the eye with telehealth

CSIRO has conducted a telehealth pilot to combat diabetes-related blindness in remote indigenous areas. The service is delivered over fast broadband.

For indigenous Australians, living remotely no longer has to mean missing out on basic health checks – especially eye care.

CSIRO trained nurses in the Torres Strait use high-tech cameras to scan patients’ retinas and then send the images to city-based ophthalmologists.

The services over the nbn™ network are enabling nurses to identify and treat remote patients.

A similar telehealth pilot program using services over the nbn™ network for older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians was recently reported by the not-for-profit organisation Integrated Living and the Department of Health.
