Taking care of business
Melbourne based digital health business Medicity is proud of the innovative inroads it’s making toward delivering cutting edge healthcare solutions designed to help improve hospital patient outcomes and experience.
Josh Farrington, Director of Operations at Medicity (part of Cabrini Technology Group), has no trouble listing examples of such innovation in action, which include:
- Eve: a pregnancy app aimed at improving the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of new and expectant mothers across Australia
- eCaptis: a real-time platform for capturing and reporting the ongoing effectiveness of patient care and their experience after being discharged from hospital
- Bluewave: an automated ultraviolet light disinfection system capable of destroying dangerous pathogens in a hospital room in a matter of minutes
Just as he can readily provide a round-up of projects aimed at making a difference to the lives of Australians accessing healthcare, Josh also has no hesitation citing a key enabler that helped make it all possible.
“We’re technology innovators and we like to think that we’re driving positive change in the health care industry,” says Josh.
“Ten years ago, without the nbn™ network, it would have been a real challenge to deliver what we deliver today.”
Specifically, it’s access to close to 1Gbps* business nbn™ Enterprise Ethernet† that Josh says has proved to be a real game changer.
Collaboration is key
Medicity is part of Cabrini Technology Group, a much larger health care technology services business, with 22 office locations across Australia and New Zealand.
“We chose an enterprise grade nbn™ network connection over a residential one because we have many applications hosted in the cloud and on our servers on-premises, so the faster connection speed and uptime guarantee is really important to us as a business."‡
Josh says, as a primarily service-based business, increased speed translates into increased productivity.
“We have 500 staff across Australia all of whom throughout the day will be accessing our network and using applications ranging from digital collaboration and project management tools, to CRMs and Salesforce pipeline management.
“So, it’s really important that all our employees across all of those sites have access to high speed, high quality broadband.”
In addition to high network reliability, Enterprise Ethernet offers small, medium or large businesses access to high capacity symmetrical wholesale download and upload speed tiers ranging from 10 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps along with dedicated support.
Making a difference through nbn™ Business Fibre Zones
Cabrini Technology Group’s Melbourne headquarters is located in one of nbn’s Business Fibre Zones (BFZ) – a key part of the nbn™ Business Fibre Initiative, which is designed to help advance the digital capability of businesses across Australia.
nbn recently announced the creation of 44 new§ nbn™ Business Fibre Zones to deliver premium business-grade fibre to an additional 60,000 eligible businesses premises across Australia, with no charge for the design and construction of Fibre to the Premises when a premium business nbn™ Enterprise Ethernet service is ordered.
This is complemented by a $73 million landmark deal signed with the Victorian Government that will see significant co-investment to deliver more fibre and faster broadband services to more areas of Victoria with the establishment of the 'Victorian nbn State Program Fund'.
Josh says, just as it has for many companies, the impact of COVID-19 has underlined the importance of being able to collaborate online through enterprise level connectivity.
“Over the past 18 months, our team have been dispersed across the country, so it’s been really important that during this time we’ve been able to access online, live, digital collaboration tools and the nbn™ [network] has been a real enabler to this.”
Cabrini Technology Group includes several technical divisions ranging from Assistive and Health technologies to Information and Communication.
In 2017, the company launched the Cabrini Centre for Innovation, which has spurred ground-breaking digital health projects.
“As a result, we’ve recently spun out a new business called ‘Medicity’ focused on digital health solutions and the nbn™ network has been a real enabler to this,” says Josh.
Riding the Bluewave
One of these innovations is Bluewave.
“More recently, as a result of COVID, we’ve commenced the development of a new product called Bluewave, an ultra-violet disinfection system developed here in this building from the ground up,” says Josh.
Recently launched to market, Bluewave uses high output ultraviolet (UVC) to cleanse a patient room or other hospital environment in a matter of minutes.
“You park it in a hospital room, fire up the UVC emitters and it bathes the room in high output ultraviolet radiation, which disinfects the room,” says Josh.
Just as nbn is investing in the nation’s future through helping lift the digital capability of Australia, Josh says it’s up to business to make the most of the opportunity access to fast and secure broadband brings.
“Businesses looking to grow their online presence need to be prepared to invest.
“They need to invest in their website, in social media, in content marketing, SEO and brand.
“And they need to invest in high speed broadband.”
* Regardless of the retail service you purchase, the actual wholesale speeds delivered by the business nbn™ Enterprise Ethernet product will be no more than 952Mbps due to equipment and network limitations.
† business nbn™ Enterprise Ethernet is only available in the nbn™ Business Fibre Zones, nbn™ Fixed Line network footprint and at limited premises served by the nbn™ Fixed Wireless and Satellite networks.
‡ nbn is very happy with Cabrini’s experience with the nbn™ broadband access network. Customer experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the service during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan or how your provider designs its network). If your service provider has not selected a bandwidth in the highest of three classes of service available for business nbn™ Enterprise Ethernet, the speeds you experience may be affected by contention on the nbn™ network, particularly in busy periods.
§ The 44 nbn™ Business Fibre Zones are included in the 284 total nbn™ Business Fibre Zones figure previously referred to.
